Part of me wants to dump the Mustang and get a Miata
I think there’s about a 0% chance I do anytime soon, but the thought has crossed my mind. I really like my Mustang, but I think a lighter more tossable car would be more fun. Not to mention the cost of tires....for how much a set of autocross tires costs for the Mustang I could get two sets for the Miata.
But it seems like I’d be giving up a lot of luxury and I’m not sure I’d like to do that. Beyond the fact that the cabin in the Mustang is large and comfortable it’s also surprisingly quiet and smooth on the highway. The big trunk is also pretty useful, and while I rarely use them the back seats are nice to have just in case.
I should go test drive one, but I fear I’ll come home with it.

Have you checked out a Toyobaru? A BRZ Limited has a decent interior and has most of the features you like about the Mustang that you’d be giving up in the Miata (sizeable trunk, back seats). They’re marginally bigger than the Miata, but still significantly smaller than the Mustang.

That tire and wheel package looks too small for the wheel arches.

I don’t advise a test drive, you WILL want one. I think the RF is a good compromise.

It’ll be slower obviously but that can be fixed. You’ll be safer leaving C&C but you’ll find yourself drawn to the local gay bars.
It’s a trade off.

Did auto cross laps in two this morning at Petit. It was quite nice inside.

As huge a fan as I am of miatas, I think they’d make a pretty tough only car. I used to have a 2008 mustang and now have an NA miata (as a second car). I just can’t imagine living day to day with such a tiny car and no other back ups. I ride my bicycle to work so I know what it’s like to live without a lot of stuff. But the reason I can do that is because whenever the mood or need strikes me, I can jump in my truck and haul whatever it is my heart desires.
Maybe if you just really never, like never ever take a third person or have more stuff with you than can fit in a back pack. Then it would be really great I imagine. Also, and I hate that this needs consideration, cars have gotten so tall that sitting in my miata feels like being at the bottom of a canyon in any sort of traffic.

Its not that much slower. Still sub 6 to 60, 14.5 quarter mile compared to the published 14.1 of the mustang.

I’ve driven one. I really don’t like the power delivery. Also the trunk release was broken in the BRZ I test drove

Ultimately I think that’s the deal breaker. My Mustang is a great only car, Miata might be a stretch. I would need to get a truck or something, which isn’t totally out of the question but I’m not a huge fan of two car ownership in my current situation.

Yeah, I found I could fit a very reasonable amount of stuff in my mustang, especially since it was a convertible, and I could lower the top and stick tall stuff in the back seat. Plus the trunk was spacious enough for a couple suit cases. I mean, I really think you could do it in the miata. It could just be tough depending on how old you are and what responsibilities you have.
For instance, I recently bough a Tacoma, I was going back and forth forever about whether I really needed the four door or if I could live with the access cab. The turning point for me was when I pulled up to my girlfriends house to pick up her mom. I realized if I had an access cab I’d have to squish my gf in those crappy back seats and her mom would have to sit up front.... or squish her mom, potentially my future mother in law, in the tiny back.
I took a long hard think about that and realized I’m becoming an adult and those options are just no longer acceptable.

I had a minor test drive in one. It’s a lot of fun. You feel like you’re going way faster than you really are. Slow car fast is way more fun.

That’s fair.
The one I drove had a dead battery. Must be something about Subaru dealerships.

Dew itttt! Just buy a 90's accord for your second car.
PS: people don’t take life advice from me, for good reason.

I test drove an ND and it was loads of fun! It’s like a well put together NA. I daily an NA but I never really need the extra space. And I’ve gotten really good at packing shit in there. But the mustang is probably twice the car in reality, and almost as fun. I mean I’ve never driven one but I hear good things

Yes! I hate the power band in that car! And the clutch is way too difficult to use in more urban areas
